Book review:

Hello Mr. Seguin.

Thank you for speaking at the Belleville Historical Society recently. Your presentation was most interesting. I have since purchased your book, through Chapters, and finished reading it today. I had trouble putting it down, and found it fascinating. I have spent the past 30 years sailing the Bay of Quinte, and all points of eastern Lake Ontario that you document, all the while with only very vague ideas of the marine history of the area. You have certainly done an excellent job in bringing the material together. Well done!

I was a little surprised that you do not mention the Naval Marine Archives in Picton as a resource...amazing work has been done there.

Also that you did not use Tibbett's Point Lighthouse at Cape Vincent as an example of what private and gov't resources are doing in lighthouse preservation in New York Sate.

I had never previously made the family lineage connection between Port Weller and Weller's Bay.

It is interesting that the original Portsmouth range follows a different route through the Lower Gap, i.e. east of the Melville Shoal, in contrast to the route west of that shoal that the current Carruther's Point range light follows.

Last September when I was at Main Duck Island I had difficulty getting into the Schoolhouse Bay harbour as the further range daymark was obscured by recent tree branch growth! I have been there many times over the years but that was a first.

I have the dubious distinction of running my small vintage yacht aground on the Melville Shoal, on rocky shoals at Main Duck (twice), on the False Ducks (Timber) Island (during a storm at night), and on the rock shoal at the mouth of the Belleville Harbour. (These are documented at eloerg.tripod.com/waupoos (and ditto/waupoos2012), under Trillium Log buttons interspersed through the left column.)

Your book is quite a marvel. Congratulations.

Alban Goddard Hill, Belleville
