WHAT READERS THINK
Oct. 3: Very friendly fire. Plus other letters to the editor

A term of utility
Re E-Ban Zone (letters, Sept. 27): It appears that at least one other professor has been keeping an e-vigil for years
in the classroom, having banned electronic `weapons of mass distraction`.
He should realize, however, that he presented something of a temporary mass distraction himself as we had to scramble
to the dictionary (more than one) to find the meaning of `misoneism`; This was revealed by Funk and Wagnall`s (a book) to
be the hatred of something new, a term of utility as an epithet for the distressing extant devolution of
human form into electronic device.
Alban Goddard Hill, Belleville, Ont.
Original letter, submitted Sept 27, 2016:
Dear Editor,
No doubt the two intrepid U of T professors Balot and Orwin feel, as the old spiritual says, that dark clouds gather 'round
them and their way will be steep and rough as they undertake to separate university students from their electronic devices
in the classroom. (Sept 24, Globe) However perhaps they will take hope that beauteous fields of electronic device free zones
lie just beyond them as at least one other redeemed soul, Professor Grenier of St. Francis Xavier, has been keeping vigil
for years in his classrooms having banned these `weapons of mass distraction`. (letter to editor, Sept 27 Globe)
He should realize however that he presented something of a temporary mass distraction himself as we had to scramble to
the dictionaries (more than one) to discover the meaning of `misoneism`. This was revealed by Funk and Wagnall's (a book)
to be the hatred of something new, a term of utility as an epithet for the distressing extant devolution of human form into
electronic device.

And an unpublished one, submitted Sept 13, 2016
Barry Hertz' use of the expression "getting a hold of the director" is enough to give a person palpitations
(An unprecedented second chance, Globe, September 13). Makes the motto of the local boat club, "Keep ahold o` yer tiller",
read like the Queen's English.
